The ie Course Syllabus

Each of the courses has its own syllabus which develops specific language areas depending on the purpose and the levels. The syllabus complies with the international language requirements, thus, enabling students to develop their language acquisition to suit their specific needs. In general, all the syllabi focus on the development of the four main skills in language acquisition, namely,

Listening
Reading
Writing

Listening

At lower levels, the listening skills developed are more towards direct understanding and direct information transfer. Naturally, as the levels progress, the syllabi will require the development of more challenging listening skills like inferencing, transfer of linear to non-linear information, drawing conclusions, etc.

All these criteria will determine the focus of the skills and subskills for listening and how the skills or subskills to be developed in the course.

Generally, the skills to be built for listening are:

Listening for understanding
Listening for main ideas
Listening for supporting details
Listening for specific information
 
Speaking

Across courses, the main objective of teaching speaking skill, is to develop the confidence level in students and enable them to converse and communicate verbally using English. Students will also be exposed to cultural limitations in oral communication. In teaching this particular skill, a lot of role-playing will be used.

At the different levels, there will be variety in terms of

The formation of sentences
The use of language expressions
The development and organisation of ideas
Types of vocabulary
The specific skills and subskills in Speaking are:
Making introductions
Use of language forms and functions
Managing discussions etc
 
Reading

Courses are built to ensure that students are able to apply the reading skills in their day-to-day activities, either as students or as professionals.

The different courses will expose students to the different types of genre and styles of language. Similarly the different levels will provide different levels of difficulty or complexity.

Apart from these, the reading skills will enable students to

Build up their competence in skimming and scanning skills
Derive meaning from context
Distinguish main ideas and supporting ideas
Read for specific information
 

Writing

Depending on the course and the level, the development of the writing skill covers the build-up from sentence to paragraph level, then to a whole essay.

This skill also exposes students to the different genres of writing such as narrative, descriptive, argumentative, report writing, proposals, letters and others. Other than that, they are also exposed to a variety of language expressions, styles and vocabulary which will enhance their grasp of grammar.

Drafting
Revising
